During the last few years, the Caribbean Islands have been adjusting to the new nuisance of sargassum washing up on its beaches. This year, in particular, is the worst that many of us have ever seen.
The Sargasso Sea (named after the seaweed) has been written about as early as the fourth century. It is the only sea that has no land borders. It is quite large with its shortest dimension measuring at least 600 miles. It is a region of the North Atlantic Ocean bounded by four currents forming an ocean. The Bermuda Islands are the closest land mass in the vicinity.
Some parts of Ambergris Caye are worst than others, although with the wind shift and a decent current it moves down the shoreline (provided you have a seawall). The island will continue to deal with this recent nuisance and hopefully there will be some sort of cleanup solution shared within the other Caribbean nations in the future.
Sargassum 2025
It's that time of the year again and the San Pedro LobsterFest 2025 has begun. The infamous BLOCK PARTY that culminates the festival will be on July 12th at the Sacas Chipas field off of Back Street, although I have conflicting reports that they may host the event back on Front Street encompassing Central Park, so please verify. I went to Belize City recently and the water taxi was packed in both directions. I'm not sure if tourists are planning their vacations during this time, but there were certainly a lot of people heading to both (Caye Caulker) islands.
I am providing a link the Facebook page for more information here.
I recently took a ride to Secret Beach. I had been there, back in April, but that was on a golf cart. My destination was Mistico (previously Sunset Palace) for a celebration. I thought I would capture some of the many changes, from town to beach in the last year, for you to view. The video is sped up to decrease the overall length of the video. It also has two parts!
